Ever wonder anything about POTATOES?

Ive got you covered for this fun facts list of Potatoes.....

Over 4,000 years ago the Inca Indians from Peru were the first ones to cultivate potatoes.

The name "Potato" came from the American Indian name "Batata"

Henry Spalding was the first potato grower in Idaho 1837.

The Average American eats 140 pounds of potatoes each year. (Wow! Thats crazy!)

A potato is made up of 80% water and 20% solid.

Potatoes are Gluten Free. (Yay!)

President Thomas Jefferson was the first to introduce "French Fries" to America when he served them at the Whitehouse for Dinner..

Potatoes are the second most consumed food in the United States.

One Medium potato has only 110 calories. (Thats not including the Cheese, Butter, and Sour Cream)

A potato is a living organism.

If held at 40 degrees in a humid environment, the potato can store in a dormant state for up to 12 months.

Potatoes were considered an aphrodisiac during Shakespeare's time.

Potatoes are a great source of complex carbohydrates for energy and potassium.

Flake-form dehydrated mashed potatoes dates back to 1954.

Potatoes (especially dehydrated) are excellent thickeners for sauces and soups.

  3. I'm gluten-free. I recently discovered potatoes are actually a grain. I suspect I'm intolerant to grains other than gluten...so I am trying to limit my potatoes.

  4. Very interesting! I love Potatoes! As a matter of fact we buy some every week. We have boiled and crushed potatoes, French Fries and hot or cold potato salad. Have a good weekend.

  7. Lots of facts I did not know!! Especially the soup thickener! Definitely did not know that one. My son loves the small potatoes show that comes on the Disney channel right after Mickey Mouse. That's about the only excitement potatoes get in our house!!
